Starting a OMW BoardA board can be started in a very short time. Identify the location for the board in an area where clinical teams will regularly pause (by the kettle in the coffee room, hand over room, blood gas machine, photocopier, where theatre notes are written, where discharge summaries are completed, where result slips are signed etc). Ensure the board is accessible to change displays.
Identify a consultant to supervise the OMW board to provide consistency and momentum for the board when trainees formally hosting the board rotate through a department. Email us for advice and support to set up and run a board, to request relevant topics from the archive, and to join the network. |
Tips For Writing a OMW-Focus the OMW into information that could be read and absorbed within one minute. Resist including everything - presentation, diagnosis, investigation and management, and focus on one aspect eg. presentation of botulism, treatment of croup, prescribing blood.
-Bullet points can be clearer than long paragraphs of text. -Emphasize the key learning point. -Use large fonts legible from a distance. -Anything can be covered related to your department clinical or non-clinical (ECGs changes, XR diagnosis, new equipment information, interesting cases with discussions, a specific illness, clinical signs, differential diagnoses, new guidelines etc). -Consider themed OMW for events eg Guy Fawkes, Valentines, Easter. -Remove any patient identifiable material. -Specific patient consent is required for any images used. -Ensure plagiarism and copyright principles are followed. -Use word or powerpoint formats only. -It takes around one hour to research and design a OMW. -Request archive OMW for format ideas. |
Tips For Coordinating a OMW Board-Display a list of previously featured topics in the bottom right of the board to inspire others.
-Change the OMW every 7-10 days. -Include a short board title eg. 'One Minute Wonders - A medical education resource to read whilst awaiting your blood gas result' -Include a small footer 'This board is part of the One Minute Wonder network www.OMWnetwork.weebly.com' -Contributors should email you their OMW to proof for factual accuracy. Only yourself should put up and take down OMWs. -Provide a 'Certificate of Contribution.' We have an example available -Offer advice to colleagues to select topics. -Prepare a 'Tips for writing a OMW' sheet with a list of suggested topics for colleagues. -Use the archive to keep the board active at busy times (Christmas and New Year, handover). -Leave preprinted OMWs with a colleague to put up for you when away on leave to keep the board active. -Email OMWs to us to add to the archive. -Do not feel demoralised if it is difficult to engage colleagues to contribute initially. This will improve as the board gains momentum. -Suggest to your department’s clinical lead the expectation for all multidisciplinary team members to produce a OMW during their post. |
